1. Waioli Mission House Groundskeeper

Spend your days surrounded by the never-ending beauty of the Waioli Mission House property. The history of Kauai thrives on the eleven-acre historic site, with the authentically preserved mission house that was the home of missionary teachers Abner and Lucy Wilcox. Originally completed in 1837 then restored in 1921, the home and property are located in the shadows of three majestic mountains; Hihimanu, Namolokama and Mamalahoa, in Hanalei. Waioli is Hawaiian for Singing Waters, which are reflected in the many waterfalls that flow down the mountains.

 

Groundkeepers serve as preservationist and care for the grounds using similar methods as those that were traditionally used in the past. It is the responsibility of the Groundskeepers to care for many different types of plants and foliage, most of which have grown at Waioli for more than 100 years. Groundskeepers are also an active part of the overall exhibit and visitor experience for the museum.

 

This full-time position offers excellent compensation based on museum industry standards and a strong benefits package, which includes medical, dental, 401(k), and paid vacation, sick and holiday time.

 

Duties and Responsibilities-

• Accomplish assignments received from the Grounds Supervisor or Resident Caretaker.

• Accomplish chores that include, but are not limited to, raking, watering, weeding, planting, pruning, fencing, clearing overgrowth, cleaning, mopping, and harvesting of produce.

 

Qualifications-

• Knowledge of proper care of plants and grass.

• Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.

• Ability to work independently and accept supervision appropriately.

• Ability to lift 50 pounds.

2. Waioli Mission House Preservation Carpenter

Share your abilities while preserving one of Kauai’s historic gems. The authentically preserved 1837 Waioli Mission House was originally restored in 1921 and has been continually maintained since. Its white clapboard exterior is stunning against the mountains of Hihimanu, Namolokama and Mamalahoa and the charming interior is truly beautiful in its simplicity.

 

Surviving hurricanes, historic floods and the severe sun that shines in Hanalei, the mission house inspires respect, but requires patience. The Preservation Carpenter serves as a conservator focusing on preserving the original design and dimensions, with the intention of making repairs indiscernible.

Duties and Responsibilities-

• Restore and maintain the buildings and collections with skilled craftsmanship while authentically preserving the sites.

• Accomplish chores that include, but are not limited to, carpentry, plumbing, painting, concrete work, and window repairs.

• The Preservation Carpenters are an active part of the overall exhibit and visitor experience, and providing additional security and monitoring for the collections, buildings and site.

• Perform other duties as assigned by the Resident Caretaker and the Director.

 

Qualifications-

• Experience, patience, and understanding to work on authentic historic buildings.

• Have strong preservation carpentry skills or the willingness to learn them.

• Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines, while understanding that priorities may change to attend to urgently needed repairs.

• Ability to work independently and accept supervision appropriately.

• Ability to lift 50 pounds.
